Stormont estate originally held a single Georgian house which would later be converted
into a Baronial style castle in the mid 1800's. In 1921, however, the Estate became
vacant and in the absence of any purchasers it was acquired for the erection of
Parliament Buildings for the new Northern Ireland Parliament. Recently the grounds of
Stormont have been used for more public orientated functions such as an open air concert
venue and the location for International sporting events. On 3 December 2005, the Great
Hall was used for the funeral service of the former Northern Ireland and Manchester United
footballer George Best.
